The Northwestern College men's basketball team made a season-high 17 three-pointers in earning a 98-84 home win over Doane in a conference match-up played today at the Bultman Center.Â
The Raiders bounced back after a close on the road in Mitchell, S.D. to improve to 5-3 in the GPAC, 8-3 overall.Â
Trent Hilbrands scored 27 points, 18 coming from the three-point arc, and was one of five Raiders to score in double figures.
Craig Sterk accounted for his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, providing Head Coach
Kris Korver's squad a spark off the bench.Â
Doane rode the hot shooting of Max Masin early as the Tigers raced out to a 15-point lead (29-14) in the first 10+ minutes. Masin hit on six of his first seven shots, draining five three-pointers, while the Tigers used their length in a zone defense to disrupt the Northwestern offense.Â
With Doane leading by 12 (36-24), a Sterk three-pointer with just under six minutes left in the first half began the Northwestern rally. Both Hilbrands and
Keegan Van Egdom drained three-pointers as well as Northwestern closed the half on an 18-7 run to cut the deficit down to one, 43-42, at halftime.
An
Isaac Heyer three-pointer to start the second half put Northwestern up 45-43, its first lead since the opening minutes, and the Raiders never trailed thereafter. Doane kept it close for awhile, preventing the hosts from a double-digit lead, until a late 18-0 run by the hosts sealed the win.
Both teams shot well from the field; Northwestern shot 59% for the game and a season-best 50% (17/34) from the three-point arc. Despite foul trouble,
Alex Van Kalsbeek still netted double figures with 16 points and eight boards. Small registered a double-double of his own with 15 points, 10 assists to go with eight rebounds. Van Egdom chipped in 11 points. Northwestern held a big edge on the boards, 40-22.
Masin scored a game-high 32 points, making 8-of-9 three-point attempts. Jaxon Harre and Anthony Laravie scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. Doane shot 48% from the field, 78% (14/18) from the three-point line.
