Northwestern College lost to Dordt 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18) in its rematch against the Defenders played tonight at the DeWitt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Raiders are 10-2 in the GPAC, 12-2 overall; Dordt finishes the regular season with an 11-5 record, 12-5 overall.Â
Anna Wedel led all players with 20 kills, nine coming in her team's set two win, and totaled 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
Makenzie Fink put away 14 kills in 33 swings, hitting .242 over the four sets, and
Emily Van Ginkel added 10 kills, one block and hit .348.Â
Northwestern hit 18% for the match and totaled four blocks to go with four aces; Dordt hit 24%, accounted for 11 blocks also had four aces.
First Set: 25-22 loss
Northwestern fell behind by as many as six (10-4 and later by a 14-8 score) only to rally with a 7-2 surge to cut its deficit to one, 16-15. Van Ginkel put away a pair of kills and
A.J. Kacmarynski had one during the run. The Raiders came all the way back to tie the set at 19 off back-to-back kills by Fink and Wedel. The teams trade points following a Defenders timeout to put the score at 20-20; Dordt closed on a 5-2 run to win set one.
Second Set: 25-22 win
Northwestern scored the first two points of set two only to have Dordt go on an 8-1 run for an early 8-3 advantage. Still down four (17-13), the Raiders began their best run of the match, scoring the next eight points behind the serving of
Taylor Meyer, for a 21-17 lead. Northwestern traded points the rest of the way, winning set point on a powerful swing by Fink to tie the match 1-1.
Third Set: 26-24 loss
Using the momentum from their set two win, Northwestern raced out to a 5-1 lead following attacks from Wedel and Kacmarynski. Dordt stormed back, however, scoring the next eight points with the serving of Karsyn Winterfeld, who served three aces during the run, and forced the Raiders into a timeout. Down 18-12 and out of timeouts, Northwestern fought back, coming back to take the lead, 21-20, after a pair of kills from Van Ginkel. The host Defenders responded with the next three points and served for the set, 24-22, only to have the Raiders score the next two points on another kill from Van Ginkel and error by Dordt. The Defenders scored the final two points, however, to win the set, 26-24.
Fourth Set: 25-18
Tight early with the teams trading sideouts, Dordt went ahead for good with a 7-1 run to make the score 16-10 behind the hitting of Corinna Timmermans and Jessi De Jager. The Defenders extended their lead to eight (20-12); Northwestern came back to within five but there would be no further rally as Timmermans and Winterfeld ended the match with kills for the Defenders.
Lacey Reitz registered her fifth double-double of the season, putting up 47 assists and matched her season high with 16 digs.
Emily Strasser totaled 23 digs and
Taylor Meyer served two aces to go with a career-high seven digs.Â
Timmermans led Dordt with 17 kills, followed by De Jager with 11 and Allison Timmermans with nine.
