Men's Basketball Host DWU In Ranked Team Match-Up

Game Time...Northwestern College will host Dakota Wesleyan for a GPAC men's basketball match-up on Wednesday night, Jan. 8. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8pm. Both teams are tied, along with Mount Marty, for second place in the current GPAC standings with a 6-2 record. Northwestern, ranked 19th in the NAIA Coaches' poll, is 14-4 overall; DWU, seventh in the last poll, is 14-3 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern holds a 47-29 lead in the rivalry against DWU, dating back to the 1965-66 season. The teams have split the last 10 games and have split the regular season match-ups played the last four years. Last year, Northwestern went 1-2 against DWU, losing the GPAC quarterfinals 110-99.

The Tigers had their three-game win streak snapped last time out, falling to top-ranked Morningside in Sioux City 74-60. Prior to that setback, DWU had defeated Ave Maria (Fla.), Trinity International (Ill.) and Dakota State, all over the Holiday break. They are tied with both Mount Marty and Northwestern for second place in the current GPAC standings at 6-2, 14-3 overall.

Head Coach Matt Wilber is in his seventh year with the Tigers program, ranking fourth all-time in wins (156). He has guided DWU to the national tournament five straight years, including a national runner-up finish in 2014-15. Wilber returns four starters and eight players from a 2018-19 team that finished 23-10 and lost to Indiana Wesleyan in the second round of the national tournament.

The Red Raiders are 2-2 in their last four games, 1-1 against teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference. They earned a 97-95 double overtime win over Doane last weekend after losing to Concordia at home (88-65) to start the new year. They are tied with Mount Marty and DWU for second in the current GPAC standings at 6-2, 14-4 overall. 

Trent Hilbrands has scored in double figures in 15 of his 18 games played, reaching 20+ points seven times. The junior guard has 885 career points, closing in on the 1,000-point milestone. Jay Small has scored in double figures in 14 games and is tied with Craig Sterk with a team-high four double-doubles this season. Sterk has scored in double figures in 13 of his 17 games this season.
