Sammy Blum scored a game-high 25 points but Northwestern came up short against No.3 Concordia, 91-76, in a conference game played tonight in Seward, Neb.
Northwestern drops to 7-8 (GPAC), 12-8 overall, and remains tied with the University of Jamestown for sixth place in the current GPAC standings. Concordia wins its seventh straight, improving to 14-1 in the GPAC, 21-2 overall.Â
Blum matched her career-high with seven three-pointers, missing just one attempt from beyond the arc, en route to her 25-point effort. Blum has scored in double figures in all but two games and has three 20+ point games this season.Â
Devyn Kemble netted 17 points, 13 in the second half, and
Alexis Toering contributed 10 points and eight rebounds in her return to the line-up.Â
Northwestern held a three-point lead (20-17) at the end of the first quarter and extended its advantage to 23-19 following a three-pointer from Blum in the opening moments of the second quarter. The Bulldogs came back later with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 31-26 and held their largest lead of the half, 37-31, on a free throw from Grace Barry with 1:41 left. Bre Schuiteman knotted the score at 37 until a basket by Barry put Concordia in front, 39-37, by the break.
A three-point play by Kemble closed the gap to one (41-40) in the opening minutes of the third quarter. With Northwestern still down just by three, Concordia got hot from perimeter, pouring in three three-pointers to trigger a 13-7 run over the final five minutes to take a 63-54 advantage.Â
Northwestern kept the deficit to single digits for the next four minutes, cutting the Bulldogs lead down to five (69-64) at the 6:37 mark. Concordia put the game away, however, with a 22-12 run, as MacKenzie Helman and Taryn Schuette knocked down a couple of three-pointers.
The Red Raiders shot 44% for the game, 50% (14/28) from beyond the arc; Northwestern held a slight advantage (34-30) on the glass but committed 24 turnovers compared to 15 by Concordia.
Jada Cunningham dished out four assists and tallied two steals.Â
Concordia shot 51% for the game, led by both Helman and Barry with 17 points each. Colby Duvel added 13 and Schuette scored 12.Â
