Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Stunned By Concordia

Carter Kent poured in a game-high 25 points in leading Concordia to an 88-65 upset win over 19th-ranked Northwestern on the Red Raiders home court Thursday night at the Bultman Center.

Northwestern loses for just the second time in GPAC play, falling to 5-2 in the league, 13-4 overall; Concordia won its third straight game and improves to 3-4 in the GPAC, 10-5 overall.

The first six points were scored by the host Red Raiders but a 15-6 run put Concordia up for good after a three-pointer by Gage Smith at the 14:20 mark. The teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes until a three-pointer by Brevin Sloup finished off an 8-2 run to push the Concordia lead to 15 (42-27) just before half ended.

Both teams shot poorly from the field in the first half; Concordia, however, made eight three-pointers compared to three by the Red Raiders over the first 20 minutes.

A basket by Craig Sterk made it a 10-point game (44-34) after the first possession of the second half but Northwestern would not get any closer. Concordia scored the next six points and went ahead by 20 (73-53) on a three-pointer by Justin Wiersema at the 6:53 mark.

Northwestern shot 44% for the game, 35% (8/23) from the three-point line; Jay Small led Head Coach Kris Korver's squad with 17 points followed by 11 points from both Sterk and Keegan Van Egdom. Small and Van Egdom led the team with seven rebounds each and Sterk matched his career-high with four assists.

Kent, the reigning GPAC Freshman of the Year, drained five three-pointers en route to a 25-point effort. Smith came off the bench to score 14, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and Wiersema added 12. Concordia outrebounded the hosts 41-39 and committed just five turnovers compared to 16 by Northwestern.
