Red Raiders, Lancers To Play For Second Time

Game Time...Northwestern College begins the second half of its conference schedule with a road game against Mount Marty Wednesday night in Yankton, S.D. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm. Northwestern has lost three of its last four games, all to ranked teams, and sits in sixth place in the GPAC with a 6-5 record, 11-5 overall. Mount Marty is in eighth place at the midpoint of the GPAC schedule with a 4-7 record, 10-7 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 59-22, dating back to the 1976-77 season. They are 8-2 in the last 10 games against the Lancers, winning seven straight.

Last Time vs Mount Marty...Alexis Toering scored a career-high 19 points in leading 11th-ranked Northwestern to a 90-67 win over Mount Marty in the GPAC opener for both teams played in Orange City on Nov. 12.

Toering rained in a career-best three three-pointers and pulled down nine rebounds, also a career-high, to lead Head Coach Chris Yaw's squad. The sophomore added three assists and two steals. Sammy Blum filled up the stat sheet as well with 17 points, seven boards, five assists and four steals while Emilee Danner came off the bench to score 15, matching her career best. 

Leading by seven (60-53) at the end of the third quarter, Northwestern outscored the Lancers 30-14 in the fourth to pull away and clinch the win. Two free throws by Blum began a 13-2 Northwestern run, finished off with six consecutive points from Toering which gave her team a 78-59 advantage with four minutes left.

Scouting Reports...

    Mount Marty Lancers: 4-7 (8th), 10-7                Head Coach: Todd James Schlimgen (2nd year)

The Lancers are 2-2 since the new year, going 1-1 in each of the last two weeks, with wins against College of Saint Mary and Midland and losses to ranked teams, Morningside and Dordt. All four games were decided by six points or less. Mount Marty currently holds the eighth and final GPAC postseason tournament spot with a 4-7 record at the mid-point of the conference schedule, 10-7 overall. They hold a one game lead on Midland and trail Jamestown by a half game.

Schlimgen is in his second year as the Lancers head coach and 13th season as a coach within the program. He spent 11 years as an assistant and was also a high school coach in South Dakota. Schlimgen returns three starters, six players, from a 2018-19 team that finished tied with Jamestown for ninth place in the GPAC at 8-14, 15-14 overall.

The Red Raiders have lost two straight, three of their last four games, and dropped five spots to 17th in the latest NAIA Coaches' poll released today. They are currently sixth in the GPAC with a 6-5 record, 11-5 overall. Northwestern is one of seven teams from the GPAC to earn recognition in the coaches' poll, joining Hastings (2), Concordia (3), Morningside (7), Dordt (9), Dakota Wesleyan (12) and Jamestown (RV). Most recently, Coach Yaw's squad has lost games to Concordia, DWU and Morningside while earning a road win over Doane.
