Men's Basketball Opens Second Half Schedule At Mount Marty

Game Time...The Northwestern College men's basketball team begins the second half of its conference schedule on the road against Mount Marty Wednesday night, Jan. 15. Tip-off at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D. is scheduled for 8pm. Northwestern has lost two straight and three of its last four to fall out of the NAIA Coaches' poll. They are tied for fourth place in the GPAC standings with a 6-4 record, 14-6 overall. Ranked 17th in the latest coaches' poll, Mount Marty is third in the current GPAC standings with a 7-3 record, 15-4 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 58-16 and has won 13 straight in the rivalry, including a 99-84 home win over the Lancers earlier this season.

Last Time vs Mount Marty...Trent Hilbrands poured in a career-high 36 points to lead Northwestern past Mount Marty 99-84 in the GPAC opener for both teams played at the Bultman Center on Nov. 12. 

Hilbrands converted 6-of-9 three-point attempts, went 12-for-12 from the free throw line and iced the game with strong drives to the basket en route to a new career high. The junior guard added five assists and pulled down four rebounds. Jay Small and Isaac Heyer scored 16 points, both season highs, and Craig Sterk added 13 points to go with 10 rebounds for his second double-double. 

Leading by three (78-75) with six minutes left, Hilbrands scored 14 points during a 16-2 run to put Northwestern in control, 94-77.

    #17 Mount Marty Lancers: 7-3 (3rd), 15-4                Head Coach: Todd Lorensen (1st year)


The Lancers have a 2-2 record since the new year, earning wins against Waldorf and Midland and losing to Morningside and Dordt. Prior to that, Mount Marty had won seven straight, including a road win against #7 Dakota Wesleyan. They start the second half of the GPAC schedule in third place with a 7-3 record, one game in front of Concordia, Dordt and Northwestern. The Lancers are 15-4 overall and are ranked 17th in the latest poll.

Lorensen is in his first season as the Lancers head coach after serving in the same role for one year at Buena Vista. He also spent time as the head of the Southwestern Comunity College and Iowa Wesleyan programs. Lorensen inhertis a Mount Marty team that returns three starters, nine players, from a 2018-19 team that finished 11th in the GPAC at 2-18, 6-23 overall. Mount Marty was picked to finish 11th in the GPAC preseason poll.

Northwestern has lost two straight and three of its last four games at the start of the new year to fall into a tie for fourth place in the GPAC standings. They are 6-4 in league play, tied with both Dordt and Concordia, 14-6 overall and have fallen out of the NAIA Coaches' poll. The Red Raiders have losses to Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan and Morningside since the new year; their lone win is against Doane, in double overtime, in Crete, Neb.
