Women's Basketball Loses To Morningside

12th-ranked Northwestern dropped its second consecutive game to a ranked team, losing to #7 Morningside 76-66, in a conference match-up played today in Sioux City, Iowa. 

The Red Raiders slip to 6-5 in the conference, 11-5 overall, with all five losses to teams ranked in the top 25. Morningside improves to 9-2 in the conference, 15-4 overall.

Devyn Kemble led Northwestern with 15 points, making 3-of-5 three-point attempts. Both Bre Schuiteman and Alexis Toering scored 12 points, giving Head Coach Chris Yaw three players in double figures. Toering filled up the stat sheet with a team-high seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and four steals. 

Northwestern was outscored by five in both the first and third quarters; the teams played even in the second and fourth quarters. 

With the game tied at 14 early in the second quarter, a three-pointer by Mustangs guard Sierra Mitchell triggered a 15-4 run to put Morningside up 29-18 with 4:41 left in the first half. Northwestern came back with a 12-4 surge, ending with a jumper by Toering, to cut the deficit to three, 33-30. Morningside ended the half on a basket by Taylor Rodenburgh for a 35-30 advantage at the break. 

Leading by six, Morningside began decisive 16-2 run, spearheaded by a pair of three-pointers from Mitchell, to go up 54-34 at the four-minute mark of the third quarter. With Northwestern still down 20, Coach Yaw's team outscored Morningside 12-2 during the final two-plus minutes, ending with a Kemble three-pointer, for a 60-50 score at quarters end. 

A late three-pointer by Sammy Blum, her second in a span of 30 seconds, brought the Red Raiders within six during the final 30 seconds but they would not get any closer. 

Northwestern shot 39% for the game, 29% (7/24) from the three-point line and were outrebounded 36-34. Blum and Jada Cunningham dished out five assists each. 

Mitchell led Moringside with a game-high 26 points, making six three-pointers. Sophia Peppers contributed a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Mustangs shot 43% for the game, 31% (9/29) from beyond the arc. 

Both teams made 15-of-16 free throw attempts.
