Seventh-ranked Northwestern earned two wins at the Viterbo Holiday Inn Express Classic played today in LaCrosse, Wis. Northwestern defeated William Woods (Mo.) in four sets (25-22, 25-15, 13-25, 25-12) and then swept Waldorf 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19.
The Red Raiders hit better than .400 in two of the four sets against William Woods, .304 for the match.
Anna Wedel put down a match-high 15 kills and both
Makenzie Fink and
A.J. Kacmarynski pounded nine kills each. Northwestern had the advantage in blocks (10-5) and aces (8-7).
A 4-0 run midway in a tight first set gave the Red Raiders enough of a cushion to earn a 25-22 win. William Woods rallied within one late but successive kills by Wedel clinched it.
Northwestern scored the first three points and never trailed in set two, eventually taking a 16-5 lead behind the serving of Kacmarynski. The Red Raiders hit 44% compared to 3% by the Owls.
Tied at seven in the third, William Woods scored 12 of the next 14 points for an 18-9 lead en route to a 25-13 win. The final set was dominated by Northwestern, using a 10-2 run to get a 24-9 lead.
Lacey Wacker put up 39 assists and nine digs while
Emily Strasser totaled 11 digs.
Five players had a six kills or more in the Red Raiders sweep over Waldorf in the evening match. Wedel and Kacmarynski led the way with eight kills, followed
Bekah Horstman with seven and both Fink and
Emily Van Ginkel accounted for six each.
Northwestern hit .354 and had the block advantage (9-6), led by Van Ginkel with 2.5. Wacker totaled 32 assists and shared team-high honors with Strasser with nine digs.
