Red Raiders Stay Unbeaten; Pick Up Two Wins At Bellevue

Seventh-ranked Northwestern picked up two more wins in their final matches at the GoSarpy.Com Invite, an early season volleyball event hosted by Bellevue University in Bellevue, Neb.

The Red Raiders began their day with a four-set win against York, 23-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-13. Northwestern hit 36% for the match, led by Anna Wedel with a season-high 19 kills to go with 11 digs. Makenzie Fink registered 12 kills and five digs while Lacey Wacker commanded the offense with 50 assists.

        First Set Loss: 25-23
An early four-point lead (11-7) was erased by York, who outscored the Red Raiders 7-3 to tie it at 14. The teams traded points thereafter as the score was knotted five times, the final coming at 21. Three consecutive points by York put the Panthers up three before kills by Wedel and A.J. Kacmarynski put down back-to-back kills to make a one point game. York secured set point on a Red Raider attack error for the win.

    Second Set Win: 25-12

Northwestern came out blazing in the second, opening up an 8-1 advantage behind the strong serving by Wacker and Wedel. The Red Raiders never let York get closer than five, holding the Panthers to a negative kill efficiency.

    Third Set Win: 25-15
Knotted at 12, Kacmarynski put down back-to-back kills to secure the lead for good in the third. Northwestern outscored York 13-3 thereafter, hitting .429 in the third set.

    Final Set Win: 25-13
Northwestern put the final set away early with a 7-1 run, getting kills from Wedel (4), Fink and Emily Van Ginkel (2). With the score 20-13, Emily Strasser served the final five points, recording three aces, to clinch the win.

Strasser led the backrow play with 16 digs and served four aces.

Northwestern closed the weekend tournament with a sweep against Evangel, 25-10, 25-13 and 25-19. The Red Raiders hit .420 for the match compared to .069 by Evangel and also had the advantage in aces, 8-1.

Wedel (12) and Fink (11) were both in double figures while Kacmarynski (7) and Van Ginkel (6) were the other top hitters. Wacker put up 31 assists and served three aces.

Northwestern hit a blistering .722, 13 kills in 18 attempts, in its 25-10 first set win. Close early with a slim 5-4 lead, Head Coach Kyle Van Den Bosch's squad closed with a 20-6 run.

A 5-0 run gave the Red Raiders control early in the second set. Fink served all five points and kills by Kacmarynski and Wacker sparked the surge.

Northwestern scored the first five points and never trailed in its 25-19 third set win.
