The Red Raiders lost in overtime to Florida National University Friday night 1-2. Northwestern falls to 1-1 on the young season and they take the field again Monday afternoon against Friends University (Kan.).
The Raiders fell behind at the 15th minute after Florida National after Adair Junio headed in a set piece goal. Vinicius Mallman played a great ball into the box and Junio was able to shake his mark and head the ball past NWC keeper
James Warren.
Florida National would out possess the Raiders after the goal but most of their possession came in their own half. FNU would try and lull the Raiders to sleep with a string of passes side to side but it did not create the chances they were hoping for.
Northwestern would start to press higher up the field as the second half started and it proved fruitful creating some good chances for the Raiders. Their chances would grow as FNU had a player sent of for his second yellow.
The Raiders would get their goal late in the second half as
James Bolger would put the ball in the back of the net after a scramble in the FNU box. It was Bolger's first career collegiate goal.
The overtime would start off well for NWC as another FNU player got sent off for his second yellow but the Conquistadors would get the overtime winner off the head of Francisco Bongiovanni. FNU would earn another free kick out wide on the left flank and would swing in a long cross where Bongiovanni would rise above the Raider defense and head home the winner.Â
"I'm proud of the way our guys competed tonight," commented head coach
Dan Swier. "They adjusted in the second half and battled back. It was a great opportunity to see our guys uphold the identity of our program...unified, competitors. And when the game got wild they displayed composure and class. We will become a stronger team as a result of this game."
The Raiders will take the field again on Monday, September 2 at 3:15pm as they take on Friends University (Kan.)
