Red Raiders Drop GPAC Opener Against Dordt

Northwestern lost a GPAC doubleheader to Dordt, losing game one 5-3 and falling 3-2 (9) in the nightcap. The Red Raiders are now 0-2 in the GPAC, 7-12 overall.

The Red Raiders totaled 11 hits and had runners on-base in all but one inning in game one but still came up short, 5-3. Jennifer Boeve went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run. Devin Dreesen and Emma Schnell both had two hits with Schnell driving in one run with an RBI single in the sixth. Emily Strasser added an RBI single and Madison Beaver, Emily Bosch and Bri Giordano added one hit each.

Schnell (5-6) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and two earned runs in six innings. The sophomore struck out two and forced the Defenders into six ground ball outs.

Dordt opened the game's scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brooklyn Van Oort belted an RBI double and Natalie Vos drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly. The Defenders tacked on two more runs in the fifth, taking advantage of two NWC errors and getting an RBI single by Vos.

Trailing 4-0, the Red Raiders scored all three runs with two outs in the sixth. Boeve and Dreesen singled and moved up after a walk to Giordano to load the bases. Strasser then drove in two with a single and Schnell followed with an RBI single but Strasser was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run.

Dordt added one run in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of singles and Northwestern error.

Tracy Soodsma (4-2) earned the win for the Defenders, giving up 11 hits and three runs in the full seven innings. Hailey Heeringa and Vos both had two hits to pace the Defenders 10-hit attack.

Northwestern had a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning of game two when Boeve drove a single up the middle to score Beaver, who led off the inning with a single. The host Defenders, however, came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Abby Smith hit a two-out single that scored Carley De Roin from second to tie it.

Still tied at two, Dordt won the game with a run in the ninth when De Roin led off with a double and came around to score after a single by Van Oort.

Coach Shane Bouman's squad outhit the Defenders again in game two 7-6, led by Boeve once again with two hits and an RBI. Beaver and Schubert had one hit each and both scored a run.

Schnell (5-7) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run in 1.1 innings of relief. Samantha Ubben started the game and was brilliant through six-plus innings, giving up just two hits and one earned while striking out six.

Rachel Evavold (1-1) earned the win, giving up seven hits and two runs in the final seven innings. The junior walked six and struck out two.
