A 13-2 run over the final three-plus minutes doomed Northwestern's upset bid against No.12 Briar Cliff as the Red Raiders lost 92-83 in a match-up played tonight at the Newman Flanagan Center.Â
The teams split the season series; Northwestern drops to 9-8 in the GPAC, 15-11 overall, BCU improves to 13-5 in the GPAC, 19-6 overall.Â
A close game throughout that featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes,
Parker Mulder put Northwestern in front for the final time, 81-79, with two free throws with 3:07 left in regulation. BCU guard Jay Wolfe tied the game with a putback on the Chargers next possession and, following a miss by Northwestern, a pair of Jaden Kleinhesselink free throws put the hosts in front for good, 83-81, at the 2:27 mark. In total, Briar Cliff scored 13 of the final 15 points, 11 by Wolfe, to earn the home win.Â
Trent Hilbrands led Northwestern with 26 points, 23 coming in the first half, and
Parker Mulder recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 17 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Jay Small added 15 for the Red Raiders, who shot 46% from the field.Â
Neither team was able to go on much of a run over the first 13 minutes as the the lead switched hands 11 times to go with seven ties. Northwestern's largest lead was three (2x) while BCU held a four-point advantage (28-24) during this time. With Northwestern leading by one (31-30) after a basket by Mulder, a three-pointer by Jackson Lamb began an 11-0 Briar Cliff run to put the hosts in front 41-31 with 5:23 left.Â
The Red Raiders stormed back with a 15-3 run of there own, taking a 46-44 lead after
Christian Korver knocked down his second three-pointer of the half. BCU took back the lead, 49-48 by halftime.
Led by the duo of Wolfe and Lamb, who scored 12 of their teams next 16 points, BCU pushed the lead up to 14 after a 16-3 run to make the score 65-51. Back came Northwestern, outscoring the hosts 21-4, led by Small, who hit three straight three-pointers to go back in front 72-69 at the seven minute mark. A conventional three-point play by Hilbrands kept the Red Raider lead at three (79-76) but Briar Cliff came back to tie the game at 81, setting up the decisive run.
Northwestern outrebounded BCU 35-34, led by Mulder with 10 and
Isaac Heyer with five. Mulder dished out six assists.
Wolfe led all players with 33 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Lamb scored 20 and Ethan Freidel added 17 points and two assists.Â
