Red Raiders' Season Comes To End In Mitchell

Northwestern College had its season come to an end with a 110-99 loss to 18th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan in a GPAC Quarterfinal played tonight in Mitchell, S.D. The Red Raiders finish with a 17-13 overall record.

Jay Small poured in a career-high 35 points, draining a career-best eight three-pointers, and Parker Mulder just missed out on a triple-double, scoring 19 points to go with 10 rebounds and seven assists. Craig Sterk scored 16, his fourth straight game in double figures, and Christian Korver came off the bench to net 12, all from beyond the arc.

A three-pointer by Small gave Northwestern its only lead, 6-5, in the opening minutes. Dakota Wesleyan then surged ahead for good, making five three-pointers during a five-minute span, sparking a 17-7 run, giving the Tigers a 22-13 edge. The host Tigers continued their barrage of three-pointers, draining six more over the next eight minutes for an 18-point advantage until Korver knocked down a three-pointer just before the half to make the score 51-36 at the break.

The teams traded baskets over the first 10 minutes of the second half as DWU continued to hold a double-digit advantage. With Northwestern down 80-68, the Red Raiders made one final push, outscoring the hosts 10-0, all scored by Sterk and Small, to get within two, 80-78, at the eight-minute mark.

DWU came back to score the next eight points en route to an 11-2 run, finished off with another three-pointer by Collin Kramer, to give the Tigers an 11-point lead. Northwestern would get no closer than six (102-96) over the final minutes, losing by 11 by games end.

Northwestern shot 47% for the game and made 16-of-41 three-pointers (39%), tied for the second most three-pointers made in a game this season. The Red Raiders were a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line.
