Northwestern College opened the season with a doubleheader loss to (RV) Lyon (Ark.) 9-0 (5 innings) and 3-2 in games played this afternoon in Batesville, Ark. 

The Red Raiders managed just one hit in their game one loss, a single by Amber Schubert with one out in the fourth inning. 

Emma Schnell (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in four innings. She walked two and struck out two. Lyon scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Breanna Langford, scoring Megan Micke from second. The Scots plated five runs in the third, taking advantage of two Northwestern errors to go with five hits. All-American Cheyenne Black belted a three-run home run and Cheyenne Herrera added an RBI triple. 

Lyon ended the game with a three-run home run by Anna Beth Conditt with one out in the fifth. The Scots totaled nine hits, led by Melanie Mooney who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. 

Northwestern fell just short in game two, losing by a run (3-2) to the unbeaten and ranked Scots. The Red Raiders totaled seven hits, led by Madison Beaver who went 2-for-4 and both Vanessa Gomez and Devin Dreesen went 1-for-3 with an RBI. 

Down 2-0, Northwestern scored its first run of the season in the top of the fourth when Schubert led off with a single, advanced to third after a bunt by Jennifer Boeve and error against Lyon. Schubert scored on a Dreesen groundout. 

Lyon came back with a run in the fifth off Red Raider starter Samantha Ubben to put the score at 3-1. Northwestern got the run back in the sixth after a Boeve double and RBI single by Gomez, who was stranded at second as the tying run. 

Ubben (0-1) pitched six solid innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out six. 

Mikayla Mullen and Black totaled two hits each and Faith Cornmesser belted a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Shyanne Pedroza earned the win in the circle, giving up seven hits and two runs in six innings.
