Small's Double-Double Leads Raiders Past Broncos

Four Red Raiders scored in double figures in leading (RV) Northwestern to a 93-76 home win over Hastings Saturday afternoon in the Bultman Center. Northwestern has won five straight games and improves to 4-1 in the GPAC, 10-2 overall.

Northwestern was led by Jay Small with 28 points while adding a career-best 10 assists for his second double-double of the season. He shot 6-12 from behind the arc and shot 11-16 from the field. Small pulled down five rebounds to add to his big stat day. 

Craig Sterk helped the cause with a solid 24 points (9-15 FG, 2-5 3pt) and grabbed eight rebounds. Trent Hilbrands and Keegan Van Egdom each had 11 points to round out the big scorers for NWC.

The Raiders and Broncos went back and forth in the first half trading buckets. Bart Hiscock's 28 points were a big part in keeping the Broncos close in the first half. that ended with a fve-point Raider lead, 42-37.

A 7-1 Northwestern run put the hosts up double-digits early in the first half and a jumper by Hilbrands made the score 56-40 at the 16-minute mark. Van Egdom's three-pointer at the nine-minute mark gave Northwestern its largest lead, 71-48, before at late surge by Hastings made it a 12-point game during the final moments. 

The Red Raiders shot 48% for the game, 37% (14/38) from the arc. They held 41-36 edge on the glass, led by Sterk (8) and Van Egdom (6). Hilbrands dished out five assists.Defensively, Northwestern limited the Broncos to 43% from the field in the second half, 29% from the arc. 

In addition to Hiscock's 28 points, Zack Johnson scored 12 and Logan Cale netted 10 for the Broncos. Hastings drops to 1-4 in the GPAC, 6-5 overall. 

Northwestern heads to Midland on Saturday, Dec. 14 for its final GPAC game of 2019. Tip-off scheduled for 4pm.
