Northwestern College could not overcome a cold shooting night in losing to Westcliff (Calif.) 62-55 in the final game of the Vanguard Christmas Classic played today in Costa Mesa, Calif.
The Red Raiders win streak is over at seven games and fall to 12-3.
Northwestern shot a season-low 33% for the game, only 26% (7/27) in the second half where they were outscored 36-25. The Red Raiders struggled from the perimeter (6/28) for a season-worst 21% and went 11/20 from the foul line.
After falling behind early,
Christian Korver hit three consecutive three-pointers in leading the Red Raiders on a 9-0 run to take their first lead 14-10 at the 12:54 mark of the first half. Six lead changes and three ties followed as Northwestern held a 30-26 advantage at the break.
Westcliff scored the first eight points of the second half and pushed the lead to seven (42-35) after a basket by Nick Pete at the 15-minute mark. Northwestern trailed the rest of the way, trimming the lead to two (44-42) and three on four separate occasions, the final at 54-51 on two free throws by
Keegan Van Egdom at the 3:22 mark.
Grant Rohrer led Northwestern with 15 points, going 6-for-7 from the field, and also pulled down nine rebounds.
Jay Small netted 10, the only other Red Raider player in double figures. Northwestern was outrebounded 38-36 and committed 23 turnovers.
Westcliff was led by Jacob Knox with 19 points and 12 rebounds; Damien King added 13, including a trio of three-pointers.
