Top-ranked Northwestern finished its regular season unbeaten as they downed No.16 Concordia (Neb.) in straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23. The Red Raiders ended conference play as the regular season champions with a 16-0 record and will be the top seed in the upcoming 8-team GPAC postseason tournament. They are 28-0 overall.Â
Concordia ends the regular season in third place with an 11-5 record, 22-5 overall.Â
Anna Wedel slammed down a match-high 17 kills, hitting .316 over the three sets, and totaled nine digs.
Makenzie Fink put away 10 kills and 2.5 blocks,
A.J. Kacmarynski accounted for eight kills,
Emily Van Ginkel totaled seven kills, hitting .700, and led the team in blocks (3).
Bekah Horstman added six kills.
Northwestern hit .357 (49 kills, 14 errors, 98 attempts) and put down seven blocks while Concordia hit .220 to go with eight blocks.Â
Horstman put down a successful attack to break a 6-6 tie early in the first set and begin a decisive 5-0 Northwestern run. Kacmarynski served the next five points as Northwestern opened up its largest lead, 11-6, and force Concordia into a timeout. The Bulldogs came back to within two (20-18) but
Lacey Wacker answered with a kill and then served the next three points to bring the Red Raiders to set point, 24-18. They went on to win 25-20, using a 29% - 13% advantage in attack percentage.
Northwestern fell behind by as many as three early and trailed for much of a tight second set. Following a Red Raider timeout, consecutive hitting errors by Concordia a successful attack by Wedel tied the set at 18, the first tie since 6-6. Concordia then scored the next two points only to have Northwestern come back to tie the set at 21. Down 24-23 and facing set point, Kacmarynki put down a thunderous attack and followed with an aggressive serve that helped set up a kill by Wedel after a Concordia overpass. Wedel then finished off the Bulldogs with an other powerful attack to win the set, 26-24.Â
The Red Raiders were down three in the final set but used a 10-4 to turn the deficit into a three-point lead, 16-13, after a kill from Van Ginkel. Northwestern pushed its lead to 20-16 until Concordia stormed back, scoring four of the next five point, to get within one, 21-20. The teams traded sideouts thereafter with Kacmarynski smashing down a winner on match point, 25-23.Â
Wacker put up 46 assists to go with five digs and
Emily Strasser totaled a match-high 10 digs. The Red Raiders had a higher hitting percentage in all three sets.
Camryn Opfer led the Bulldogs with 15 kills and Kara Stark totaled 10 kills in 27 attempts.Â
