Grant Rohrer scored a career-high 27 points and
Jay Small registered his first career double-double in leading Northwestern to a 97-79 win over Peru State in a match-up of teams earning votes in their respective NAIA coaches' polls.
Northwestern wins it second straight game and improves to 7-2 on the season; Peru State drop to 3-3.
Rohrer dominated the low-post against the Bobcats, going 12-of-16 from the field, and eclipsed his previous career-best (21 points) in the last game against Jamestown. The senior also grabbed 10 boards for his third career double-double. Small provided the hot-hand from the outside, draining a season-high seven three-pointers, one away from his career-best, en route to a 23-point effort. Small pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds, 13 on the offensive end, and matched his career-best with six assists.
The Red Raiders made four of their first five three-point attempts to storm out to a 19-6 advantage with just five minutes gone by. A 10-0 run later in the half, led by Rohrer, put Northwestern up 38-18 at the six minute mark. Coach Korver's squad led 54-35 at the break, shooting 65% from both the field and three-point line.
Peru State made it a 14-point game (68-54) after a three-point play by Henry Tanksley, who led all players with 39 points, with 13 minutes left to go. Northwestern responded with an 11-3 run, fueled by Small and Rohrer who scored nine during the surge, to go back up by 20+ points, 79-57. The Red Raiders led by at least 16 points over the final 10 minutes.
Northwestern shot 54% from the field, 47% (14/30) from the three-point line, and held a commanding 50-29 edge on the glass.
Craig Sterk scored 14 and both
Keegan Van Egdom (13) and
Trent Hilbrands (11) were also in double figures. Hilbrands matched his season high with six assists.
Peru State shot 42% from the field, led by Tanksley and Devon Colley, who combined for 55 of the 79 Bobcats' points. Tanksley made five three-pointers and shot 16-of-27 from the field.
