Northwestern College used stifling defense to down the University of Jamestown 78-51 in a conference match-up played today at the Bultman Center.
The Red Raiders improve to 3-1 in the GPAC, 7-1 overall; Jamestown slips to 2-1 in the conference, 6-2 overall.
Devyn Kemble led all players with 15 points and was one of three Red Raiders to net double figures.
Bre Schuiteman totaled 13 points, nine from beyond-the-arc, while
Sammy Blum put in 10 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Three additional Red Raiders scored at least eight points each.
Defense was the story as Northwestern held Jamestown to a season-low 27% from the field, 19% (4/21) from the three-point line. The Red Raiders also forced 29 turnovers and held an opponent to under 60 points for the fourth time this season.
The teams played even for most of the first quarter until Northwestern scored seven of the final nine points to take an 18-13 lead following a basket by Kemble. Another 10-2 run by the hosts pushed their lead to 13 (28-15), largest of the first half, but Jamestown came back with the next 10 points to make it a three-point game, 28-25, at the three-minute mark. The Red Raiders closed strong, outscoring Jamestown 10-3, for a 38-28 halftime lead. Both Schuiteman and Blum knocked down a three-pointer during the run.
Northwestern dominated the final two quarters, outscoring Jamestown 40-23 over the final 20 minutes. A basket by
Jada Cunningham put the hosts up by 21 (56-35) at the 3:22 mark and they led 63-45 at quarters end. Head Coach
Chris Yaw's squad limited Jamestown to just two field goals in the final quarter as the Red Raiders pulled away for a 27-point win.
Northwestern shot 40% from the field, 37% (11/30) from beyond the arc and made 15-of-20 free throw attempts. Both
Emilee Danner and
Alexis Toering accounted for three steals each.
Grace Benz was the only Jamestown player in double figures with 10 points. The Jimmies, now 6-2 on the season, outrebounded Northwestern 48-45.
