Bekah Horstman and
Anna Wedel totaled 12 kills each in leading No.2 Northwestern to a four-set win (25-21, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15) over Briar Cliff in a GPAC match-up played tonight at the Butman Center.
Northwestern pushes its win streak to 20, its longest since 33 straight in 2013, and improves to 8-0 in the GPAC, 20-0 overall. Briar Cliff is now 3-6 in the GPAC, 13-10 overall.
Horstman hit over .600 for the match (.647), making just one error in 17 attempts; Wedel hit .360 (12 kills, 35 attempts, 3 errors) and
A.J. Kacmarynski was also in double figures with 10 kills.
Northwestern had the advantage in kill efficiency in three of the four sets, hitting .321 for the match compared to .108 by the Chargers.
Makenzie Fink (9 kills) and
Emily Van Ginkel (7 kills) were the other top hitters for Head Coach
Kyle Van Den Bosch's squad and
Lacey Wacker put up 47 assists. The Red Raiders held a commanding 13-6 edge in total blocks, led by Van Ginkel with 4.5.
Tied at 11, Northwestern used a 7-2 run to pull ahead for good and win set one, 25-21. Kacmarynski put down two kills and both Horstman and Wedel added one each during the surge.
Briar Cliff grabbed the lead early in the second set, scoring five straight points on the serving by Maureen Imrie. Northwestern slowly came back, eventually tying the set at 16, 17 and 18. Still knotted at 21, the Chargers used kills from Analyse Stapleton, Victoria Gonzalez and Noel Phillips to spark a 4-0 run and win set two, 25-21.
Fueled by the blocking by Van Ginkel, Northwestern began the third with a 7-1 run and led from start to finish for a 25-20 win. The Red Raiders hit .684 (14 kills, 1 error, 19 attempts) in the set.
Tight early in the fourth, an 8-2 Northwestern run broke the final set open as they held BCU to a negative hitting percentage.
Emily Strasser led all players with 18 digs and Wedel totaled 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Briar Cliff was led by Victoria Gonzalez with 14 kills and Phillips added 10.
