The Red Raiders (6-6, 3-2 GPAC) took care of Dordt University (3-7-2, 1-3-1 GPAC) Wednesday night, 1-0.
The Raiders started off the night strong with a heavy bombardment of attack and a lot of possession to keep Dordt from ever looking dangerous in the early going of the match.
Northwestern put 12 shots up in the first half and it was capitalized on off a NWC corner kick,
Gijs Dingemans put in a great cross off a corner in the 43rd minute that forced the Dordt keeper to comer out and readjust his angle to the ball. The ball tipped off of his fingers and Jkae Foscalina was there to tap in the cross. The goal was Foscalina's team leading 7th of the season and Dingemans' 4th of the year.
The match would be fairly even throughout the second half mostly due to the strong wind that put the Raider defense and keeper
James Warren under duress throughout most of the 45 minutes.
The Raiders statistically outplayed the defenders but the Raiders could not grab another goal in the second half and the Defenders, aided by a strong wind at their back, kept the Raider defense and keeper
James Warren on their toes. Warren would end up making only 3 saves on the night but each one was big and kept the one goal advantage for NWC.
"It is tough to predict how rivalry matches are going to play out", commented head coach
Dan Swier. "Dordt was very organized tonight and we struggled to break them down. Fortunately Jake buried one of our many corner kick opportunities and James made a couple of unreal saves to preserve the shutout."
The Raiders host Dakota Wesleyan Saturday evening at 7:15pm at the NWC Soccer complex.
