Top-ranked Northwestern stays unbeaten with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-19) sweep over (RV) Morningside in a conference match-up played tonight at the Bultman Center.
Tonight's match was also senior and parent's night, an evening where Red Raider senior,
Ann Pater, along with all the player's parents, are recognized by the coaches and fans.Â
Anna Wedel smashed down 14 kills to lead the Red Raiders, hitting .294 over the three sets.
Makenzie Fink accounted for 10 kills and 1.5 blocks, hitting an impressive .500, and
A.J. Kacmarynski added nine kills.
Northwestern had the edge at the net, hitting .371 to go with six team blocks compared to .141 and three blocks by Morningside. Head Coach
Kyle Van Den Bosch's squad totaled seven aces, the most since the Mount Marty match held on Oct. 2.
Lacey Wacker contributed four aces while Fink, Kacmarynski and
Emily Strasser all had one each.
Tied at two early in set one, Northwestern used a 5-1 run to take control, getting kills from
Emily Van Ginkel, Wedel (2) and Fink. The Red Raiders stretched the lead to nine (15-6) and took their first double digit lead after a four-point service run by Wacker (20-9). A successful attack from Kacmarynski ended the set, 25-13.Â
Northwestern and Morningside traded points until the score was tied at four; the hosts then scored the next five points, four served by Strasser, to take a 9-4 lead. Kacmarynski powered down two kills and Fink added one during the surge. The Red Raiders once again stretched their lead to 10+ points later, winning the set 25-13.Â
A 4-0 run erased the Red Raiders largest deficit of the match (4-1) and the hosts held the lead from then on in winning the final set 25-19. Morningside cut the lead down to one (13-12) but kills from Fink and Wacker, followed by an ace serve from Wacker, put the Red Raiders back in front by four.Â
Northwestern hit better than the Mustangs in all three sets, posting a match-best .519 in set one (17 kills, 3 errors, 27 attempts). Wacker put up 37 assists, Strasser added 20 digs and
Bekah Horstman (2 blocks) and Van Ginkel (1.5 blocks) led the blocking efforts.Â
Emma Gerber led Morningside with 14 kills, hitting .414 for the match.Â
