Wedel, Fink Power Red Raiders Past Midland

Playing in its second consecutive five-setter, second-ranked Northwestern picked up a key road win over No.8 Midland in a match played this afternoon in Fremont, Neb. Individual scores were 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-9. 

Northwestern improved to 10-0 in the GPAC, 22-0 overall; Midland drops to 5-5 in conference play, 14-8 overall. 

Anna Wedel led all players with 26 kills, hitting over .400 for the match, and totaled a career-high 22 digs. Wedel has hit for 20+ kills four times and has 11 double-doubles this season. Makenzie Fink totaled 13 kills, four digs and assisted on five blocks while Bekah Horstman added 10 kills in 28 attacks. 

Northwestern hit. 245 and accounted for 10 total blocks, led by Emily Van Ginkel who assisted on eight. Midland, the top blocking team in the GPAC, was limited to eight blocks and hit .122 for the match.

With the Red Raiders leading 8-6, a kill from A.J. Kacmarynski began a 12-4 run as Northwestern grabbed control en route to a 25-15 win in the first set. Coach Kyle Van Den Bosch's squad dominated the net, holding Midland to a negative attack percentage while hitting close to. 300. 

Midland hit its match-best (.310) and pulled away late for a 25-20 set two win. Tied for the ninth and final time at 16, Midland scored three of the next four points to take a 19-17 lead. A kill from Wedel brought Northwestern within one (21-20) but the Warriors scored the final four points for the win.

An early 5-0 run proved to be the difference in the Red Raiders 25-18 win in set three. An ace serve gave Midland its lone advantage only to have Northwestern score the next five points behind the serving of Jadeyn Schutt and kills from Wedel and Van Ginkel. Northwestern maintained at least a two-point lead throughout and was up by as many as eight.

Set four was all Midland early, going up by as many as five (10-5). Kills from Horstman and Fink coupled with errors from the hosts brought Northwestern all the way back, tying the set at 17. Still tied at 21, the Warriors scored the next two points which proved to be the difference in their 25-23 win.

Van Den Bosch's squad hit a match-best .385 and never trailed in winning the final set, 15-9. 

Lacey Wacker initiated the Red Raider offense with 48 assists and totaled a career-best 22 digs. Emily Strasser led Northwestern with 24 digs and Bri Kleinwolterink added a career high 15 digs.

Three Midland players, Shelby Bretschneider, Brooke Fredrickson and Sydney Morehouse, were all in double figures for Midland with 17, 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
