No.2 Northwestern College was upset 81-74 in overtime by Doane University in a conference match-up played this afternoon at the Haddix Arena in Crete, Neb. The Red Raiders drop into a second place tie with Dakota Wesleyan with a 14-3 conference record, 20-3 overall.Â
Down by two with 1:15 left in regulation,
Anna Kiel recorded a steal and then scored on a jumper in the lane with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime, 67-67. Kiel began the extra period by making 1-of-2 free throws to give the Red Raiders their final lead, 68-67. Consecutive baskets by Doane reserves Cheyenne Ostrander and Nicole White gave the Tigers the lead for good with 3:20 left in overtime. Northwestern made it a one-point game twice, the final coming on a jumper by Kiel with 1:47 left. The Tigers, however, scored the final six points to earn the upset win.
Kiel led Northwestern with a season-high 21 points, going 8-for-9 from the field, before fouling out in the overtime period.
Kassidy De Jong added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists and both
Haley Birks (13pts) and
Sammy Blum (10pts) were also in double figures. Northwestern, playing with
Darbi Gustafson and
Alexis Toering, had three players foul out (Birks, Kiel and Blum).Â
An early 12-2 run, capped by a Birks three-pointer and basket by Taylor VandeVelde, gave Northwestern its largest lead (24-10) with under a minute left in the first quarter. With Northwestern still up 14 early in the second, Doane rallied with a 16-3 surge to get within one, 29-28, and make it a game. Birks and Kiel both scored on conventional three-point plays near the end of the half to give the Red Raiders a 37-31 lead at the break.
Doane made it a one point game midway through the third but Northwestern scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 51-44. Bre Schuiteman knocked down a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter, giving her team a 10-point lead. Consecutive baskets by Doane cut the lead down to eight only to have Birks convert a three-point play to put Northwestern on top 62-54 with 4:53 left. The host Tigers came back with a 10-0 run, the final three points on a three-point play by McKenzie Beach, giving her team the lead, 64-62.Â
Northwestern shot 44% from the field, 22% (6/27) from the three-point line and went 14-for-19 from the line. The Red Raiders were outrebounded for the second straight game, 37-26.
Sidney Blackburn led Doane with 16 points and both Beach and Ostrander added 15 each. The Tigers shot 54% from the field and made 21-of-34 free throw attempts (62%).Â
