Northwestern College lost for just the second time since the new year, falling to Doane 72-49 in a match-up played this afternoon in Crete, Neb. The Red Raiders move to 8-7 in the conference, 14-10 overall. Doane improves to 4-12 in the GPAC, 7-17 overall.
The Red Raiders shot 35% for the game, second lowest percentage of the season, and especially struggled from the three-point line, going 1-for-20 from the arc. The 49 points is the lowest scored in a game since the 2003-04 season.
Northwestern fell behind early after Doane began with an 11-2 run to force a Red Raider timeout. Able to regroup, Coach Korver's squad rallied and trailed by just one, 27-26, when
Parker Mulder capped an 8-2 run with a lay-up at the 3:23 mark. Doane led by four at intermission, 32-28.
The Red Raiders was as close as three on two separate occasions early in the final half and were down by just six, 50-44, with 7:34 left to play. It was all Doane from there as the host Tigers put the game away with a 22-5 run, limiting Northwestern to a pair of field goals over the final seven-plus minutes.
Trent Hilbrands led Northwestern with 14 points and
Steven Kragt chipped in eight. Mulder grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out a team-leading three assists.
Doane shot 51% for the game and drained 10-of-16 three-pointers (63%). Koh Flippin led the Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds; Garran Pauli and Joe Burt added 13 points each and Nick Kornieck scored 12.
