Kassidy De Jong was one of four Red Raiders to score in double figures, leading No.3 Northwestern to a big 90-46 road win over College of Saint Mary (Neb.) in a GPAC match-up played this afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
Third-ranked Northwestern (11-2 GPAC, 17-2 overall) shot better than 50% for the game, nearly 60% in the first half, and limited the host Flames to 22 points on nine field goals in the first half. The Red Raiders sweep the season series against CSM and win their second consecutive game heading into two pivotal home games this week against ranked teams.
De Jong led the Red Raiders with 17 points and 11 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season and 28th of her career.
Taylor VanderVelde added 14 points, one shy of matching her career high,
Sammy Blum scored 12 and
Darbi Gustafson turned her GPAC-leading eighth double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwestern never trailed as an early 11-0 run, finished off with an
Alexis Toering jumper, put the Red Raiders in front 13-2. Two free throws by Gustafson later extended the Red Raider lead to 22-5 and Coach Yaw's squad held a 27-9 edge at the quarter.
Bre Schuiteman and Blum knocked down consecutive three-pointers and triggered a 16-2 Northwestern run to push the lead to 43-11 at the 5:48 mark of the second quarter. Northwestern led by 28 (50-22) at halftime, 66-39 by the end of the third quarter and closed the game with a 20-5 run over the final eight minutes to earn the 40+ point win.
Northwestern shot 51% for the game, 44% (11/25) from the arc and dominated the boards to a 44-22 advantage, including 16 on the offensive end. The Red Raiders dished out 26 assists for the game, five each by
Haley Birks, Blum and De Jong.
College of Saint Mary (1-11 GPAC, 2-17 overall) shot 33% for the game and was led by Tyler Sumpter with a game-high 18 points.
