Hilger, Fink Lead Red Raiders Past Jamestown

Lauryn Hilger and Makenzie Fink led 16th-ranked Northwestern to a sweep over the University of Jamestown (N.D.) in conference match-up played tonight in Jamestown, N.D. Individual scores were 25-19, 25-12, 25-21. 

The Red Raiders improve to 2-1 in conference play, 11-4 overall.

Both Hilger and Fink hit over .500 for the match and totaled 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Emily Strasser led the backrow with 18 digs and Lacey Wacker lofted up 35 assists and directed a Red Raider offense that hit .415, their third highest percentage of the season. 

Set One...
The score was tied five times early one until Northwestern outscored the hosts 8-1 to take a 16-9 lead. Hilger put down a kill to take the lead for good and also served an ace while Fink finished off the run with two kills. A 5-2 Jamestown surge put the hosts down just three (22-19) but Hilger earned a sideout for the Red Raiders and Fink put down two more successful attacks to win the opening set 25-19. 

Set Two...
The Red Raiders hit .591 and led from start to finish for a dominant 25-12 win in set two. They scored eight of the final 11 points and limited the Jimmies to a mere six kills.

Set Three...
The clincher proved to be the closest of the three sets with Jamestown holding the lead as late as 15-14. A kill by Hilger put Northwestern in front by two (20-18) and the Red Raiders closed with a 5-3 run to earn the GPAC win.

Emily Van Ginkel added six kills and the Red Raiders served six aces, two by both Fink and Strasser.

Jamestown was led by Kennedy Conzemius with six kills in 12 attacks and Julina Niemeier put up 12 digs. 

Northwestern begins a busy week with two home matches on Sept. 18 and 20, beginning with Mount Marty on Tuesday night.
