The Red Raider women's soccer team gets their 2017 season underway Monday against the Viterbo University, beginning at 3:00pm.
Â
The Raiders come off a 2017 season in which they finished 11-6-3 overall and 5-3-2 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. Their season ended in the semi-finals losing to Concordia (Neb.) in a tough 1-2 game.
Northwestern's non-conference schedule is one of the tougher schedules in coach Karnish's career. The Raiders start on the road against Viterbo and then turn around five days later and face the second ranked team and NAIA National runner up, Benedictine College. The Red Raiders then host Kansas Wesleyan University and Trinity Christian College (RV) for the Pizza Ranch Classic over Labor Day Weekend. The Raiders end the non-conference slate on the road at Baker University and York College
"We have a non-conference schedule that is going to be a challenge in a few ways for us this fall. The travel for some of our games will test our mental toughness but the opponents we will play will give us tough competition. We face some top NAIA teams along with some rising teams in the Midwest. We are excited for the challenge that this early season schedule will give us."
The conference schedule begins with two teams who are receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason poll. The University of Jamestown, a GPAC newcomer and Concordia University will be tough tests at home for the experienced Raiders.
The Raiders will Mount Marty (S.D.), Doane (Neb.), College of Saint Mary (Neb.), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Dordt (Iowa), and Hastings (Neb.) all on the road this year.
The Red Raiders will welcome Briar Cliff (Iowa), Midland (Neb.), Presentation (S.D.), and Morningside after their bouts with Jamestown and Concordia.
Â
"We really like how our conference schedule is laid out this year," commented Coach Karnish. "We will have a lot of tough games at home and we know that every game on the road in the GPAC is hard to win. We look forward to the challenge that this conference brings every year and we strive to finish in the top four and host at least one postseason game this year."
