Late Rally Falls Short in Regular-Season Finale

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern lost to Dordt 2-1 on Wednesday. The Red Raiders put seven of their eight shots on goal, while the Defenders finished with a 12-8 advantage in total shots.
 
The Red Raiders generated the first chances, with Olivia Regnerus shooting high at 1:37 and Camryn Wilkinson putting attempts on frame at 6:55 and 7:40 around a Mya Cole corner. The Defenders answered with a shot saved by Ella Top at 12:44, an attempt wide at 16:12, and a corner before scoring at 22:19 for a 1-0 lead. The Red Raiders earned another corner at 22:55, forcing a save at 41:16, but Top also had to stop shots at 40:46 and 44:28 as the Defenders carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
 
The Defenders scored off an assist at 52:08, leaving the Red Raiders facing a 2-0 deficit early in the second half. The Raiders pushed back with shots on goal from Regnerus and Grace Timm, while Bailey Bynum kept the margin there with a save on an attempt at 64:45. Marissa Talamantes finished an Aliza Edwards assist at 75:03 to make it 2-1, but the Defenders answered with late pressure and saved Edwards' shot at 89:51 as the Defenders held on by that score.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Northwestern finishes the regular season at 9-9 overall and 3-8 in GPAC play.
  • Marissa Talamantes scored in the 76th minute off an assist from Aliza Edwards to bring the Raiders within one.
  • Seven of Northwestern's eight shots were on goal, led by two from Camryn Wilkinson.
  • Ella Top recorded three first-half saves, while Bailey Bynum added one in the second half.
  • Edwards nearly found the equalizer in the closing seconds, but her shot was saved with nine seconds remaining.
