Kayla Tindall and
Emma Schnell both pitched complete games in leading Northwestern to a doubleheader sweep over Briar Cliff, 6-0 in game one and 9-6 in the nightcap. The Red Raiders move into first place in the current GPAC standings with a 5-1 league record, 18-5 overall, their best start to the season since the 2005 season (23-5).Â
Tindall pitched a gem in game one, limiting Briar Cliff to just a pair of hits, both singles, in improving her record to 8-3 on the season. Tindall walked two, struck out 10 and recorded her first shutout of the season, 12th of her career. The senior displayed her prowess at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.Â
Northwestern made the most of its six hits in game one, also taking advantage of three Chargers' errors in the field.
Amanda Everhart went 2-for-3 with a run scored and both
Emily Sones and
Katie Elliott had one hit each to go with an RBI.Â
Tindall put her team in front 1-0 with a solo home run with one out in the top of the first inning. Head Coach
Chris Nachtigall's squad blew the game open with a five-run fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate.Â
Summer Williams (2-2) took the loss, giving up three hits and four runs, one earned, in 3.1 innings of work. Codie Fineran and Isabella Gonzalez had singles to lead the Chargers at the plate.Â
Leading 8-0 in game two, Schnell (9-1) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and allowed just three earned runs in earning her ninth straight win. Schnell gave up eight hits, struck out three and did not allow a walk in seven full innings.
Jessica Sandbulte paced the Red Raiders 14-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Both
Emily Bosch and
Jensen Boger had two hits each and Everhart belted a three-run home run in the third inning.Â
Northwestern scored three runs in the top of the first inning when
Madison Beaver reached base on an error and was followed by doubles by Sandbulte, Bosch and Boger. Everhart's three-run home run sparked the Red Raiders four-run third inning as Nachtigall's squad went up 7-0. Northwestern added another run in the fifth inning when Sandbulte doubled and stole both third and home. The Red Raiders completed the scoring with a run in the sixth when Tindall doubled and pinch runner
Renee Choquette lated scored on a single by Sandbulte.
Gonzalez dropped to 1-6 on the year, giving up seven hits and six runs in 2.1 innings. Lanae Shiley and Abbygail Lint combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and three runs. Brenna Oliver led the Chargers at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
