Red Raiders Split Games To Open Season

Kayla Tindall struck out a career-high 13 batters in leading Northwestern to a 9-1 win over Bethany (Kan.) in the season opener played today in Wichita, Kan. The Red Raiders lost to (RV) Friends 3-2 later in the evening to move to 1-1 on the season.

Tindall allowed seven hits and one earned run in earning the complete-game win. The senior struck out a career-best 13 and did not give up a walk while going 1-for-3 from the plate with a run scored.

Emily Bosch paced the Red Raiders' offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in her collegiate debut. Jessica Sandbulte went 2-for-4 with a pair runs scored and Emily Sones also went 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs. Emma Schnell and Katie Elliott both added two hits as well in pacing the Red Raiders' 13-hit attack.

An RBI single by Sones put the Red Raiders up 1-0 but Bethany plated its only run with a solo home run by Alyssa Montoya. Northwestern broke the game open with a three-run third, sparked by a two-run single by Sones. Coach Nachtigall's squad added four runs in the sixth, fueled by a two-run home run by Elliott, and one more in the seventh.

Lauren Quintana suffered the loss for the Swedes, who drop to 5-10 on the year, giving up 11 hits and seven runs in 5.1 innings.

Down 3-0 heading into their final at-bat, Northwestern scored two runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate before ending the game with a pop-up to cut the rally just short in losing to Friends 3-2. Emma Schnell (0-1) pitched well in the loss, giving up six hits and three earned run while striking out 10 in her collegiate debut in the circle. The freshman went 2-for-3 with a two run single in the seventh inning to lead the offense. Bosch, Sandbulte, Sones and Cheyenne Wilcke also had one hit each.

Both teams totaled six hits and Friends was led by both Kylie Fox and Isabella Gonzalez with two hits each. Heather Breslin earned the win and improved to 1-2 on the year, giving up six hits and two runs in seven innings.
