10th-ranked Northwestern used a dominant second half to earn a 92-58 home win over Mount Marty in a GPAC match-up played tonight at the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders improve to 11-4 in the GPAC, 21-4 overall, with three games remaining in the regular season.
Leading by five (41-36) at the break, Northwestern outscored the Lancers 51-22 over the final 20 minutes to get its 19th straight home win over MMC. The Red Raiders shot 61% in the second half and buckled down defensively, limiting the visitors to 28%.Â
Northwestern opened the second half with a 14-2 run, fueled by consecutive three-pointers by Francis, forcing a Lancers' timeout. Holding a 17-point lead (66-49) at the 10-minute mark, Northwestern scored the next 18 points, extending its lead to as many as 35 (84-59) with five minutes to go.
Colton Kooima poured in a game-high 21 points and dished out four assists, scoring 20+ points for the 15th time this season.
Nathan Wedel scored 16 while both
Riley Francis (11) and
Derek Buysse (10) were also in double figures.Â
Coach Korver's squad shot 53% for the game, 42% (11/26) from beyond the arc, and held a huge edge, 43-27, on the boards.
Spencer Pauley led the rebounding effort with seven and
Steven Kragt pulled down five.Â
Northwestern scored the game's first 10 points and extended its lead to 19 (40-21) with a three-pointer by
Christian Korver. Mount Marty, however, closed the half with a 15-1 run over a six-minute stretch, sparked by senior guard Marcus Mathieu with nine points during the surge.
Mathieu led Mount Marty (2-13 GPAC, 5-21 overall) with 18 points and three rebounds.Â
