Red Raiders Come Up Short Against Midland

Trent Hilbrands scored a game-high 23 points in the Red Raiders' 74-73 home loss to Midland in a conference match-up played today at the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders have lost two straight and move to 2-4 in the conference, 7-6 overall. 

Down by as many as 19 in the first half, Northwestern used an 18-7 run to close the gap to 37-30 by halftime. Hilbrands scored nine during the Red Raider surge and both Parker Mulder and Jay Small knocked down three-pointers to start the run.

Northwestern opened the second half with an 11-0 run and took its first lead since the beginning of the game, 41-37, after a basket by Chris Borchers. The lead changed hands three times over the next few minutes until a 14-4 Northwestern run put the hosts in front 64-56 with 5:42 remaining. 

With Northwestern still up by seven (68-61) moments later, Midland came back with a decisive 10-0 run, taking the lead for good with a basket by Dillon Faubel with 1:28 left to play. The Red Raiders were held scoreless for nearly four minutes and held without a field goal for the final 4:23 except for a last-second three-pointer by Hilbrands to make the final score 74-73.

The Red Raiders shot 50% for the game, 37% (7/19) from the arc, and 73% (16/22) from the free throw line. Hilbrands led all players with 23 points, making 7-of-12 field goal attempts. Small added 11 points before fouling out in the closing minutes. Northwestern was outrebounded 34-33, led by Isaac Heyer with eight and both Small and Steven Kragt with five each.

Midland (3-4, 5-7) was led by Bryce Parsons with 21 points and Faubel scored 13. The Warriors shot 46% from the field, 41% (9/22) from the three-point line.
