Red Raiders Win 10th Straight; Roll Over Trinity Christian

Kassidy De Jong poured in a game-high 22 points in leading No.5 Northwestern to its 10th straight win, defeating Trinity Christian 94-45, played tonight in the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders improve to 13-1 on the year; Trinity Christian drops to 2-14.

De Jong was one of four Northwestern players to score in double figures, scoring 22 points to go with eight rebounds. The senior knocked down five three-pointers and has scored in double figures in every game this season. Taylor VanderVelde scored a career-high 15 points, making 6-of-8 field goal attempts, and both Haley Birks (13) and Darbi Gustafson (10) were also in double figures. 

Northwestern scored the first five points of the game and opened up a 14-2 lead at the five-minute mark following a three-pointer by Birks and a lay-up by Sammy Blum. The Red Raiders doubled up Trinity Christian, 24-12, by the end of the first quarter. 

A three-pointer by De Jong capped a 14-3 Northwestern run as the Red Raiders pushed the lead to 38-15 with three minutes left in the half. Head Coach Chris Yaw's squad closed with a 10-2 run as Northwestern led 48-18 at the break. The Red Raiders limited the Trolls to just two field goals in the second quarter.

Leading 55-25, Northwestern put the game away with a 22-2 run, pushing its lead to 77-27 after a basket by Alexis Toering. Baskets by Kailyn Groves and Jada Cunningham to close the quarter put Northwestern in front 82-29 by the end of the third period. Marina Keck knocked down a three-pointer to give the Red Raiders their largest lead (54 points) midway through the final period.

Northwestern shot 50% for the game, 43% (12/28) from the three-point line. All 12 Red Raiders players scored and accounted for at least nine minutes of playing time. Northwestern outrebounded the Trolls 56-28, led by De Jong with eight and VanderVelde with seven. Blum dished out six assists and Toering added six points and four assists. Devyn Kemble scored a career-best nine points.

Breanna Toppen led Trinity Christian with 13 points, followed by Kyla Pitts with nine. 

Northwestern will play Dakota State on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 4pm. The Lady T's lost to Dordt 80-57 in the first game of the day.
