Men's Basketball To Play Hastings This Weekend

Game Time...Northwestern makes the long trip west along I-80 for a GPAC match-up against (RV) Hastings this weekend, Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off at the Lynn Farrell Arena is at 4pm. The Red Raiders are 3-4 in the GPAC, 8-6 overall, and the host Broncos are 4-3 in conference play, 9-4 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern is 33-22 all-time but just 3-7 over the last 10 games against the Broncos. Last year, the teams split, each winning on the road; Northwestern def. Hastings 78-62 early in the season; the Broncos earned a 106-94 win over Northwestern mid-season.

The Broncos lost to Dordt last weekend (Dec. 8) 81-75 and are 3-2 over their last five games. They hold wins over ranked teams, Dakota Wesleyan and Bellevue, and also have defeated Midland, Doane and Mount Marty within the GPAC. Hastings' losses are to Friends in the first game of the season along with Morningside and Concordia.

Gavers is in his sixth season as the head of the Broncos program and returns two starters, seven players from a 2017-18 team that finished fifth in the GPAC with a 10-8 record, 20-11 overall. Gavers was a long-time head coach at Grand Island Central Catholic prior to coming to Hastings. The Broncos were picked sixth in the GPAC preseason poll.

The Red Raiders earned a 96-73 home win over sixth-ranked Briar Cliff last time out (Dec. 12) behind a 19-point effort by sophomore Trent Hilbrands and 17 from senior Steven Kragt. Northwestern moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference standings (with Dordt and Midland) at 3-4, 8-6 overall.

Northwestern ranks third in the GPAC in scoring, averaging 90 points per game. They are the top rebounding team in the conference (+10) and have had the edge on the glass in all but three games. 

Trent Hilbrands has scored in double figures in all but one game this season; has seven 20+ point games

Jay Small has scored in double figures in 12 games; 2 20+ point games
