First Half Shooting Leads Red Raiders Past Trinity Christian

Northwestern drained all 15 of its three-pointers in the first half and buckled down defensively in the second half to earn its second straight win, 89-73, over Trinity Christian in the final game of the Saint Xavier Classic.

The Red Raiders improve to 6-4 as they resume conference play next week.

Christian Korver scored a season-high 20 points, all coming in the first half, and knocked down six three-pointers. Grant Rohrer contributed a career-best 18 points and matched his career-high with 10 boards for his second career double-double. Both Trent Hilbrands (14) and Jay Small (12) were also in double figures for Coach Korver's squad.

Both teams were red-hot from the field in a high scoring first half that resulted with a 56-41 Northwestern lead. The Red Raiders shot 54% from the field, 60% (15/25) from the arc, during the first 20 minutes. Trinity Christian also shot 54% from the field and made 6-of-12 three-pointers, shooting 50% from beyond the arc.

Trinity Christian began the game with a 12-6 run, consuming over five minutes, before Korver and Hilbrands got hot from the arc to bring Northwestern in front, 17-16. The lead switched hands nine more times over the next 6-8 minutes as the teams traded baskets. Down 29-28, Northwestern outscored the Trolls 16-3, once again using the three-point shot to spark the run, to take a 44-32 advantage. Korver knocked down a pair of three's and both Small and Grant DeMeulenaere hit one each for the Red Raiders. Northwestern extended its lead to 15 by half, 56-41, on another three-pointer by DeMeulenaere.

Scoring became much tougher in the second half as both teams cooled off considerably from the field, shooting around 35% over the final 20 minutes. Northwestern led by as much as 17 (69-52) at the 12-minute mark only to have Trinity make one final charge, getting within nine (73-64), with eight minutes to go. The Red Raiders, however, gave up just three field goals over the final eight minutes and pulled away late to earn the 16-point win.

Northwestern shot 47% for the game, 48% from the arc, despite not hitting a three-pointer in the final half. The Red Raiders continued to dominate the boards, 38-30, led by Rohrer with 10 and Isaac Heyer, who matched his career-high with seven. Heyer also dished out a career-best six assists.

Terrance Lacey led the Trolls with 13 points, followed by Jalyn Clark (11) and Vinko Glavan (10). Trinity Christian shot 42% for the game but only 32% in the second half.
