Darbi Gustafson scored a game-high 21 points and
Kassidy De Jong contributed 17 in leading No.8 Northwestern to an 86-58 road win over Waldorf this evening in Forest City, Iowa. The Red Raiders won their fourth straight game, improving to 7-1 on the year. Waldorf drops to 2-4.
Gustafson scored 20+ points for the fourth time this season, going 10-for-18 from the field en route to a 21-point effort. De Jong missed just two shots, going 6-for-8 from the field, in scoring 17 points despite being in foul trouble for most of the game. Both Gustafson and De Jong have scored in double figures in every game this season. De Jong also moved up to ninth place all-time in career scoring, passing Karen (Hutson) Ettleman, and Gustafson moved up to 23rd place in career points, passing both Missy Van Klompenburg and Val Kleinjan.Â
Close after the opening minutes, Northwestern went on a 14-4 run over the final four minutes to take a 26-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Another 9-0 run put Northwestern in front 41-22 after baskets by Bre Schuiteman,
Haley Birks,
Jada Cunningham and Gustafson. The Red Raiders led 48-31 at the half, shooting 56% both from the field and from the three-point line.Â
Northwestern maintained at least a 16-point lead the rest of the way and pushed its advantage to over 20 during the final quarter.
For the game, Northwestern shot 53% and made 9-of-17 from the three-point line. Birks (12) and
Alexis Toering (11) were also in double figures for Coach Yaw's squad, who outrebounded Waldorf 41-24, puling down 12 on the offensive glass. Birks dished out a team-high four assists.Â
Waldorf shot 40% for the game and was led by Marisela Perez and Michaela Graffunder with 13 and 12 points, respectively.Â
Northwestern will have the rest of the week off before returning to GPAC play against Dordt on Wednesday night, Nov. 28 at 6pm.
