Trent Hilbrands scored a career-high 29 points and
Parker Mulder recorded his first career double-double in leading Northwestern to an 89-83 home win over Mayville State this evening at the Bultman Center.
Down by two at the half, a basket by Hilbrands coupled with a pair of three pointers put the Red Raiders in front for good, 62-58, with 13-minutes left to play. Northwestern pushed the lead to eight (72-64) until an 8-1 Mayville State run cut the lead down to one, 73-72, at the 4:32 mark. Coach Korver's squad scored the next seven points, five from the free throw line, to get their lead back to eight as they held off the Comets over the final minutes.
Hilbrands made 10 of his 15 field goal attempts and converted seven free throws en route to a career-best 29 points, 10 points more than his previous high. Korver came off the bench to net 14 points and
Jay Small added 11 points. Both Mulder and
Craig Sterk scored 10 points and Mulder pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds to go with four assists.
Northwestern shot an even 50% from the field, 24% (7/29) from the arc, and held a huge 51-32 advantage on the boards.
The first half was tight with the teams trading baskets for the opening 10 minutes.
Jay Small gave the Red Raiders a one-point lead with a three-pointer (22-21) but the Comets then began the best scoring run of the first half, going on a 12-4 surge, for a 33-26 advantage with six minutes left. Northwestern battled back to get within one following a baseline jumper by Korver and the hosts were down two by halftime, 41-39.
Mayville State shot 43% for the game, 32% (12/37) from the three-point line, led by Gorg Alhag with 23 points. Daniel Lindgren chipped in 18 points, 16 coming in the first half.
Northwestern will host Valley City State on Saturday at 3pm.
