Strong Perimeter Play Keys Red Raider Win

Northwestern College drained a season-high 13 three-pointers in its 94-82 road win over Mount Marty Wednesday night at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D. Eighth-ranked Northwestern runs its record to 2-1 in the conference, 5-1 overall, and Mount Marty remains winless in the GPAC with an 0-3 record, 3-3 overall.

Five Red Raiders scored in double figures, led by Kassidy De Jong with 27 points, going a season-best 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. Darbi Gustafson totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double of the season, and Sammy Blum netted a career-high 17 points. Haley Birks (14) and Bre Schuiteman (11) round out the top scorers.

Tied at 55 late in the third, Blum and Schuiteman knocked down back-to-back three-pointers on the front end of a 12-2 run to put Northwestern in front 67-57 at the end of the quarter. Both Blum and De Jong made consecutive three's to push the lead to 14 (75-61) with six minutes left and the Red Raiders converted their final nine free throw attempts to clinch the double digit win.

Northwestern shot 54% for the game and a season-best 52% (13/25) from the three-point arc. The Red Raiders were outrebounded for just the second time this season, 30-24, but won the turnover battle, 18-12.

Ali Kuca led the Lancers with 17 points and both Karlee McKinney and Jamie Tebben were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Like the Red Raiders, Mount Marty shot well from the field, going 33/59 for 56%.

Northwestern held a two-point lead (20-18) in a back and forth first quarter that saw four lead changes and two ties. The Red Raiders built up an eight point lead (34-26) after a three-pointer by De Jong and basket by Gustafson. Mount Marty cut the lead down to four by halftime, 36-32.

The Red Raiders stayed in front for most of the third until a 13-2 Mount Marty run gave the Lancers their only lead in the second half, 53-51.

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 50% or better in every quarter by the second; the teams combined to miss just three shots from the field in a high-scoring third quarter; Northwestern shot 80% in the third and the Lancers were 75%

De Jong dished out four assists, becoming the 37th Red Raider player with 150 assists in a career

Both Gustafson and De Jong have scored in double figures in every game this season

Blum has hit at least two three-pointers in every game this season

Northwestern will head to Sioux City on Saturday for another road match-up  against a ranked team, #11 Morningside, beginning at 5pm.
