Makenize Fink accounted for a match-high 14 kills in leading No.9 Northwestern to a 3-0 sweep over the University of Jamestown (N.D.) for senior day this afternoon at the Bultman Center. The Red Raiders finish the regular season with a 13-3 record and can be no lower than the No.3 seed in the upcoming GPAC Tournament. They improve to 22-6 overall.
Playing in one of the final home matches of her career, senior
Lauryn Hilger slammed 13 kills and totaled 10 digs for her 14th double-double of the season.
Lacey Wacker lofted up 38 assists and directed a Red Raider offense that hit .283 for the match.
Emily Strasser led the backrow defense with 13 digs and senior
Allison Koehlmoos put up seven digs in one of her final home matches of the season.
First Set:
A 7-0 Northwestern run, served by
Ann Pater, put the hosts up for good after the set was tight early. Successful attacks by Hilger (2) and Van Ginkel highlighted the Northwestern run. The Red Raiders extended the lead to double digits (21-11) after an ace serve as Van Den Bosch's squad closed with a 6-1 run to win the first set 25-12.
Second Set:
A pair of kills by Fink along with a successful attack by Hilger and an ace serve from Strasser put the Red Raiders in front 4-1 early in set two. With Northwestern still up five (16-11), a kill by Jordan Thomas began a 7-1 Jamestown run to bring the Jimmies up one, 18-17. The teams traded points until, with the score tied at 20, Northwestern scored four straight, getting kills by Van Ginkel and Hilger to get to set point. A ball handling error on Jamestown ended set two with Northwestern on top 25-22.
Set Three:
Northwestern broke open a close third set with a 7-1 run, using kills from
Bekah Horstman and Fink to go up 17-11. Van Den Bosch's squad closed with an 8-4 run, finishing the Jimmies with a kill from Hilger on match point.
