Northwestern Drops Tough GPAC Match

The Red Raiders (9-5-2, 5-2-2 GPAC) fell to Morningside College (10-4-1, 8-1 GPAC) Saturday night 0-1.

The first half was very tight and what was more of a midfield battle than anything else. Both teams created some good buildups in the attack but could not get a great chance on goal.

The second half became much more physical as both teams became frustrated in their lack of attack and some hard fouls took place.

The lone breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when the Mustangs earned a free kick from 25 yards out. Julius Fassbinder stepped up to hit the free kick and hit a right-footed bender to the top right corner of the goal. Matt Scott could not read the shot through the wall and could not get close to the shot.

The Raiders could not muster up another great chance and would end up losing off Fassbinder's free kick.

"Tonight was a tough result," commented head coach Dan Swier. "I didn't think we rose to the challenge of playing against a top team in our conference. I know the difference in the match was a free kick goal but we simply aren't creating enough dangerous scoring opportunities against good teams like we did early in the season."

The Red Raiders will take on Dordt College at 3:15pm. The Raiders could still finish in the top 4 of conference but need some help from other teams to do so.
