Late Goals Earn Win for Raiders

The Red Raiders earned their 3rd conference win of the year with a 2-1, comeback, win over Dakota Wesleyan University.

Northwestern (4-11, 3-6 GPAC) scored two late second half goals to rally back after being down 0-1 early in the second half.

The Tigers (4-10, 2-7 GPAC) were looking strong on the counter attack all evening but were not able to convert a strong chance in the first half while the Raiders held the majority of possession but were struggling to find that final ball to spring a quality chance.

The second half started of much like the first but the Tigers were able to convert on a counter attack in the 51st minute when Marina Brightman found the ball off a bouncing pass from Gemini Wesley and was able to put it through the hands of Liz Foster

The Raiders would rally though creating chance after chance and buildup after buildup but would not capitalize until the 74th minute when Josie Maasdam would earn a free kick just outside of the Tiger 18 yard box. Kadence Cruse stepped up to take the free kick and smashed a finish through the wall and past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.

The Red Raiders would continue their push for a comeback win in the 79th minute when the Raiders found themselves with a strong chance and Tiger keeper Hannah Bowes made an initial save but could not fully corral the rebound and Cherish Shuka would capitalize on the lose ball and dribble it into the empty net. The goal was Shuka's 3rd on the year.

Northwestern would survive a late barrage in the final minute from the Tigers as Liz Foster was able to make two great saves to preserve the much needed win.

"It was a fantastic win," commented head coach Ben Karnish. "It had all the makings of the last two games where we get close to scoring but just come up short but today we found a way to win the ugly battles in the boxes and come out with a huge win. It was great to see our team persevere."

The Raiders continue their hunt for the GPAC postseason with a tough matchup against Morningside College Saturday at 5pm at the NWC Soccer Complex.
