The Red Raiders (4-12, 3-7 GPAC) dropped a heart breaker Saturday night to Morningside College (9-6-1, 7-3 GPAC) 0-1.
It was a tale of two halves as the Mustangs controlled the tempo in the first half and were able to generate 11 shots whereas the Raiders mustered only one chance in the first half.
The second half was a different story for the Raiders as they came out fast and quick and kept the majority of the possession along with generating a handful of great chances. Northwestern had three great chances with loose balls in the 6 yard box but could not find the goal they needed.
Morningside started to work back into the match in the 75th minute creating a few good chances of there own and earning a series of corner kicks putting
Liz Foster to the test.
The game was back and forth for the next 10 minutes until an odd series took place in front of the Red Raider bench that saw the Mustangs break out and get their leading scorer, Merle Bublitz, free on the right side of the field.
She took her space and was able to bury a 1v1 finish on Foster in the 86th minute.
The Raiders kept knocking on the door to try and earn the equalizer but could not find the net.
The Raiders are now on the outside looking into the GPAC playoffs. They need to earn at least one, likely two, and have some help to get into the postseason.
"it was a tough night tonight," commented head coach
Ben Karnish. " We are not out of things and in all honesty, still control our own destiny in some ways. We played well enough to win but credit to Morningside for their defending in the box on the great chances we had."
The Red Raiders take on Dordt College at 1pm in Sioux Center, Iowa Wednesday.
