Kassidy De Jong erupted for a season-high 32 points in leading No.18 Northwestern to a 92-61 road win over Midland in a GPAC match-up played today in Fremont, Neb. The Red Raiders earned their season-best fourth consecutive win and improved to 7-2 in the GPAC, 12-5 overall. Midland drops to 3-6 in the conference, 8-11 overall.Â
De Jong made 14-of-20 field goal attempts en route to a new season high 32 points, four shy of matching her career best. The junior also pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Anna Kiel came off the bench to score 20 points, going an impressive 9-for-12 from the floor, and grabbed nine boards.
Darbi Gustafson added 12 points and 15 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season.
A lay-up by Kiel finished off a back-and-forth first quarter that resulted in a 19-18 Midland lead. Northwestern opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run getting six points from De Jong and a three-pointer by
Paige Danner, to take the lead for good, 27-19. Midland came back to get within three (27-24) moments later but Northwestern answered with an 11-2 surge, capped by a three-pointer from Bre Schuiteman and a lay-up by Kiel for a 38-26 advantage. The Red Raiders led 44-29 at the break.
Northwestern quickly built its lead up to 20+ points in the third quarter and went ahead by 30 midway into the final period after a basket by Gustafson.
The Red Raiders shot 51% from the field and held a commanding 54-33 edge on the boards, pulling down a season-high 20 offensive rebounds.
Renee Maneman dished out nine assists and
Haley Birks contributed a career-high five assists.
Midland shot 35% for the game and was led by Joelle Overkamp with 18 points and five rebounds. Amanda Hansen added 11 points and was the only other Warriors player in double figures.Â
