Hot Shooting Broncos End Red Raiders Win Streak

Northwestern College came up on the short end of a 106-94 decision to Hastings in a conference match-up played today at the Bultman Center. The loss snaps the the Red Raiders eight-game win streak as they fall to 7-3 in the GPAC, 17-3 overall.

Nathan Wedel scored a game-high 39 points, the second highest total of his career, to go with 10 rebounds to lead the Red Raiders. Colton Kooima added 15 points and six assists while Parker Mulder came off the bench to score 13. 

The visiting Broncos shot better than 60% in each of the two halves, 64% for the game and 44% (7/16) from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded Northwestern 39-32, including 10 on the offensive glass. Bart Hiscock was among five Broncos players to score in double figures with 24, followed by Kevin Miller (22) and Jake Hansen (21). Connor Musiel and Zach Kitten scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. 

Down by three at the half, a three-pointer by Kooima followed by a basket by Riley Francis put Northwestern in front for the final time, 49-47, in the opening moments of the second half. The Broncos, however, outscored the hosts 17-4 over the next five minutes, getting three-pointers by Miller and Hansen, to take the lead for good, 64-53. The teams traded baskets over the seven minutes and Northwestern made one final charge to get as close as eight (87-79) after a couple of free throws by Francis. Hastings put the game away by scoring the next seven points to snap the Red Raiders win streak.

Northwestern shot 46% for the game, 32% (9/28) from beyond the arc. Kooima dished out six assists. 

A high scoring, back-and-forth first half ended with Hastings leading by three, 45-42. The lead switched hands 11 times and the score was tied seven times during the opening 20 minutes. 

Of Note...

Nathan Wedel moved past Tony Krogman (1987-91) and into 15th place in career scoring with 1634 points; the senior also became the 16th player to reach the 700-rebound milestone; Wedel has 706 boards, moving past Darwin De Vries (1965-69).
