No.19 Northwestern College stayed unbeaten with a dominating 63-26 road win over Briar Cliff in a GPAC match-up played this afternoon at Memorial Field in Sioux City, Iowa. The Red Raiders improve to 4-0 overall, their best start since the 2014 season, and 2-0 in GPAC play.
The Red Raiders totaled 575 yards on offense and matched the third most points scored in program history, two shy of matching the all-time record (65) set in 1994 against Concordia.Â
Jacob Kalogonis sparked the Northwestern rushing attack, going for 107 yards on 13 carries, recording his third 100-yard game of the season and sixth for his career. Kalogonis recorded three of the Red Raiders five rushing touchdowns.
Tyson Kooima accounted for 359 yards of offense and four touchdowns, making plays both in the passing and running game. The freshman completed 20-of-26 pass attempts for 284 yards and three scores while also rushing for 75 yards on 10 carries and a score.
Levi TeBrink totaled a game-high seven catches for 107 yards and a touchdown while teammate
Shane Solberg caught five passes for 84 yards and two scores.Â
Northwestern scored touchdowns on nine of its 11 possessions on offense, reaching the endzone nine straight times after being forced to punt on its first drive.Â
Briar Cliff opened the game's scoring with a seven-play, 53-yard drive when Chance Barlow threw a 30-yard touchdown to Logann Freeman for a 6-0 lead. Northwestern linebacker
Sean Powell blocked the point-after attempt, however, and
Logan Richard returned it for a two-point return.Â
The Red Raiders grabbed the lead for good on the next possession as Kalgonis scored on a four-yard run, capping an impressive 11-play, 80-yard drive with 5:44 left in the opening quarter.Â
Another four-yard run by Kalogonis put his team up 15-6 early in the second and, following a Briar Cliff punt, the Red Raiders scored six plays later with a 30-yard pass from Kooima to TeBrink for a 22-6 advantage at the four-minute mark. Briar Cliff made it a nine-point game (22-13) after Barlow connected with Joe Heinrichs for a 16-yard touchdown, completing a quick 5-play, 61-yard drive. Northwestern's offense responded just 50 second later, however, when Kalogonis scored his final touchdown, a 13-yard run, to finish off a four-play, 65-yard drive that used up 50 seconds.Â
Leading 28-13, the Red Raider special teams capped the first half scoring as Solberg blocked a Chargers punt and
Tanner Machacek recovered and ran it back for a 28-yard touchdown for a 35-13 halftime lead.Â
Northwestern put the game away with 21 unanswered points to start the second half, scoring on back-to-back touchdown passes from Kooima to Solberg (26 yards and 13 yards) followed by a seven-yard touchdown run by Kooima at the start of the fourth quarter.Â
Barlow scored the Chargers third touchdown with an eight-yard run with 8:30 left to play while Northwestern scored for the final time when
Gabe Toki scampered 22-yards to record the first touchdown of his career at the six-minute mark.Â
Northwestern averaged nearly nine yards per play against the Chargers and totaled over 500 yards of offense for the second time this season. The Red Raiders had 36 first downs and held the ball for nearly 39 minutes.
Bryce Van Beek led the Raider D with a career-high eight tackles and also recorded the only turnover, nabbing an interception in the fourth quarter.
Joey Novotny added 6.5 tackles and Powell recorded five stops and a blocked kick.
Briar Cliff totaled 363 yards, led by Kwame Johnson who rushed 19 times for 134 yards and a touchdown.
