The Red Raiders dropped their
GPAC opener to Midland University 2-1 Saturday night. Northwestern has dropped the conference opener by the score of 2-1 two years in a row.Â
Midland starting the scoring early slipping a long ball over the top on the Red Raider back line to Robert Wiseman who was able to beat the back line and hit a one-time volley over the head of
Matt Scott. The goal came 55 seconds into the match. Cesar
Cuellar was credited with the assist. The Raiders we able to maintain their composure after the early goal but were not able to create many chances in the first half, having only 3 total shots in the first 45 minutes.
Wiseman was able to earn his brace in the
64th minute when
Cuellar took a long throw in over the top of the Red Raider back line and Wiseman was able to get to the goal line and slot a ball into the Raider net.Â
The Raiders got on the board in the
73rd minute after they were awarded with a penalty kick.
Anselmo Kim stepped up and calmly put the ball to the right side of the goal opposite of the Midland keeper. The goal was Kim's 4th of the season.Â
Northwestern was not able to capitalize on any of there 5 other shots in the second half.
Matt Scott made 7 saves on the night to keep the Raiders within striking distance.Â
"We played 45 minutes of very good soccer tonight," commented Head Coach Dan
Swier. "In conference play 45 minutes won't be enough and tonight we saw that."
The Raiders look to get their first conference win when they travel to
Doane University Tuesday, September 26.
