The Red Raiders endured tough playing conditions to earn a 1-0 at Graceland University today as the warm, humid weather took a toll on players from both teams. The match was also played on Graceland's practice field as their home field underwent renovations this summer that have not been completed.Â
The Raiders did not put together multiple chances like they did earlier in the week at Viterbo University but they were able to keep Graceland scoreless and earn their second shutout of the two game season.Â
The first half was fairly uneventful with a lot of the play in the midfield space. Northwestern only put together one shot while Graceland put 5 on the stat sheet. The second half started off with quick pace though as
Anselmo Kim almost created a very good goal by himself as he took on his defender 1 on 1 and took a chance on a shot from 20 yards out, just missing wide back post.Â
Anselmo Kim's strong start to the second half continued though. In the 69th minute when he received a ball from
Philippe Patri on the sideline and looked to hit a hard cross to
Alex Schussman on the back post. The ball instead found its way into the back of the net on the back post and the Raiders we able to defend the rest of the way to earn the victory. This is Anselmo's 2nd goal of the year in as many games. It is also Philippe's first collegiate assist.Â
Northwestern had a chance to add to their tally in the 79th minute when
Jacob Garcia-Nieto hit a wonderful free kick that was met with a wonderful save by Liam Smith, his one tallied save on the day.Â
Matt Scott earns his first shutout of the season and the backline held their end of the bargain for the second game in a row.Â
"I was proud of our guys for playing hard for 90 minutes to grind out a win and not concede any goals," commented Coach Dan Swier. "We have a team objective to fight relentlessly to score the last goal in each game and so far, we have done so in two very different games.Â
The Raiders go for three wins in a row Wednesday when they host Bellevue University at 7pm for their first home game of the year.Â
