The Red Raiders came up short Wednesday at home against Bellevue University (RV). The 1-0 loss is the first of the season for the Raiders after starting off the season 2-0 with wins against Graceland University and Viterbo University. The Raiders' season opening shut out streak also ended at two games, their longest since 1999 when Northwestern started off the season with four shutouts in a row.Â
The Raiders played well throughout the match but a turnover late in the first half allowed the Bruins to play a ball through the NWC back line and watched Andres Blanco bash home a open goal rebound after
Matt Scott made a great save off the initial shot.Â
Northwestern had chances to tie up the game in the second half and in the 70th minute,
Cole Cruse had a great chance off a through ball from
Braxton Williams but Cole's shot was put wide. The Raiders finished with no shots on frame for the match.Â
Â
Matt Scott made multiple saves to keep the Raiders close throughout the game. His seven saves, one of which came off a breakaway, were the biggest bright spot on the night.Â
"We were very impressed with our confidence building from the back line and the ability to handle pressure from an elite opponent," said Assistant Coach
Adam Potter. "Now we look forward to Friday and finishing off the chances that we create to compete and put together a win against another elite team."
The Raiders kick off the Pizza Ranch Classic Friday night at 5pm at the NWC Soccer Complex against Benedictine College (RV) who upset #1 Hastings College Wednesday night 3-1.Â
